History: Bezawada, as Vijayawada was then called, was founded around 626 CE. The Chinese Buddhist scholar Xuanzang stayed here for a few years around 640 CE.
Geography: Vijayawada lies on the Krishna river at about 11 m above sea level, surrounded by hills and three canals, the Eluru, Bandar and Ryves.
