History: Ongole's name is believed to come from Vangaprolu, which became Vangavolu and then Ongolu. The city's history goes back to about 230 BCE, to the Mauryas and Satavahanas.
Geography: Ongole lies about 10 m above sea level, around 149 km south-west of Amaravati, and summer temperatures reach about 44 °C.
