- Macherla is the headquarters of Macherla mandal in Palnadu district. Nearby Nagarjunakonda, named after the Buddhist scholar Acharya Nagarjuna, was a major religious centre for Brahmanism and Buddhism, and its museum can be visited.

- The name Macherla is said to come from Mahadevi Cherla. The town is the capital of the Palnadu region, with a history of over a thousand years, and the famous Battle of Palnadu was fought between Macherla and Gurazala between 1176 and 1182.
