Local economy
Aurangabad, renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, was a major silk and cotton textile centre. Himroo, a silk and cotton blend, and Paithani silk saris are made here, and ginning factories opened after the Hyderabad–Godavari Valley railway reached the city in 1900.
Culture and food
Hindus are a little over half of the population, with large Muslim and Buddhist communities and smaller Jain, Sikh and Christian groups. The old city shows a strong Hyderabadi Muslim influence in its culture.
History
The village of Khadki was made a capital by Malik Ambar, the minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II, and was later renamed Fatehnagar before taking the name Aurangabad.
